AI strategy for growing businesses

Where should a small business start with AI?

Start with a costly, repeated piece of work, not a shopping list of tools.

Begin with the work

The useful question is not ‘Which AI tool should we use?’ It is ‘Which piece of work is expensive, repeated and stable enough to improve?’ Customer enquiries, meeting follow-up, proposal preparation, research and internal knowledge retrieval are common candidates, but only when the underlying process is understood.

Separate possibility from priority

Score each opportunity against value, frequency, data availability, exception risk and ownership. A glamorous use case with unclear inputs and no owner is a weaker starting point than an unremarkable workflow that happens every day.

Run the smallest honest test

Define the current baseline, the human review required and the point at which the test stops. A useful pilot produces evidence about quality, time, cost and adoption. It does not need to become a programme to be valuable.

What to carry into the work

  • Choose a business job before a tool
  • Measure the current friction
  • Keep a human owner and review point
  • Scale only after the evidence is useful
